Earthquake in Romania on September 16, 2024
On September 16, 2024, a magnitude 5.4 earthquake occurred in the seismically active Vrancea region of Romania. The tremors were felt not only in major cities such as Bucharest, Constanța, and Galați but also in neighboring countries, including Ukraine and Moldova. In Odessa, despite the distance, residents also experienced slight tremors.
The Vrancea zone is one of Europe’s most active seismic regions, located in eastern Romania in the Carpathians. This area is known for deep earthquakes caused by the collision of the Eurasian and African tectonic plates, creating significant underground movements. Earthquakes in this region can have devastating effects, as seen in 1977 when the magnitude reached 7.9, causing widespread destruction.

Impact of Earthquakes on Sailors
Sailors aboard ships during earthquakes typically do not feel the strong tremors as they would on land. The water acts as a cushion, dispersing seismic waves. However, if the ship is near the shore or in port, the crew might feel the earthquake, especially if it is accompanied by a tsunami or other marine phenomena.
What to Do During an Earthquake
In the event of strong tremors, it is recommended to immediately leave buildings, particularly older or unreinforced structures. Sailors, in such cases, should be prepared for any potential consequences in ports, as the aftermath of an earthquake can lead to disturbances on the water. To monitor seismic activity, the “Earthquake” app can be used.
Despite the earthquake, it is important to remember that vehicles registered in Ukraine in Romania are required to undergo technical inspections.
